STORIES have been pouring in thick and fast since we launched our Me & My Motor feature last month, so much so that we thought we’d give motor fans a double tonic this week.

First up is Paul Steel, who lives in Barbourne, Worcester, who has three cars to his name: a 1976 BMW 1502, which he’s had for about seven years; a 1972 Datsun 240z, a relative newbie in the Steel household, only having been there since last November; and a 1984 Audi GT coupe (daily), which he’s had for about two years.

Paul explains: “The BMW new class range, alongside the Alfa juniors and GTVs of the same period, were my childhood poster cars, 70s touring car champions, and despite growing up near the gates of the Austin at Longbridge (or maybe because) I grew up loving Italian and German machines more than the Brits that everyone I knew owned.

Saucy: A local snap!

“When it came time to move a car on (I have a long bucket list and want to try as many cars as possible) it was the Alfa that had to go.

“The BMW, which is not a standard 1502, it’s more 1802 is the longest I have owned a car.

“I replaced the Alfa with the 240Z, another car I remember from childhood, and a rare car in UK roads, that was supposed to be an easy fix up and run, but even with time spent over lockdown, some parts are not so easy to find in the UK (it’s a LHD US import).

“It’s still off the road, but you certainly won’t miss it when it is finally back out there.

“The BMW is my ‘sunny days daily’, also used by my son Joe.

“It’s taken to local shows and BMW club events, but I love classic and historic racing events more than static shows, so it goes to Silverstone classic and Donington historic, where you will see similar cars racing on track.

Paul's current project

“Japanese cars, classic and more modern, have a scene all of there own, looking forward to visiting some of those events, but I got an LHD example to make things easier on a big European trip that I hope to take in the next year or two, if circumstances allow.”

Paul is fortunate that his love of cars runs in the family.

“My other half likes classic cars. A few years ago we were lucky enough to drive around Tuscany in a classic Fiat and Alfa hired in country.

“That gave us the bug to drive from Worcester and across Europe in a classic.

“My elder son loves classic cars too. He’s a big Mini fan and at one time we both owned Minis and did a few events together.”

Paul’s first car was a mk1 Fiesta that was donated by my wife’s aunt. “It was so rusty, thatt when it was stolen and recovered, it was written off, even though there was no damage!”

Parked up outside Cooter's

And Paul confesses to being unable to name just one fantasy vehicle.

“Being a fan of Italian cars and designers, the Lamborghini Miura is my dream car, the first super car.

“But then there’s all those homologation specials, like the group B Lancias, Audi sport coupe, or the BMW CSL, Alfa GTA, various Porches... it’s hard to have just one dream car!

“I guess my favourite famous vehicle would have to be the good ol’ boys, the Dukes of Hazzard Dodge Charger.

“It was my favourite show, and I went to Cooter’s museum in Nashville a few years ago – it was great.”
