Sabrina Bridge in Worcester is set to undergo its first major refurbishment in 28 years.

Preparations for the much-needed major refurbishment have already begun.

During the work, the main span of the bridge will need to be taken away for the refurbishment to happen off site - meaning the bridge will be shut - before being replaced later in the year. Worcestershire County Council, which is carrying out the work, has not said how long the bridge will be shut.

Next week an off peak lane closure and temporary traffic lights on Hylton Road will be in place to allow for delivery of materials.

There will be a lane closed on Hylton Road from Monday, September 21 for the rest of the works.

Councillor Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for Highways, said: “It’s great that we’re now ready to start on the major refurbishment of this well used city bridge.

“There will be some inconvenience during the period that the main span of the bridge is removed, but we have liaised with the university, racecourse and rowing clubs amongst many others to ensure this causes as little disruption as possible. This is another example of the Council’s commitment to invest in, and improve, walking and cycling provision, not only in Worcester but across the county.

"There will be the need for some lane and road closures during the works and the bridge will be closed whilst the refurbishments take place off site."

This refurbishment is a key part of the Council’s infrastructure programme, which is receiving more investment than it has in 50 years. The programme could also see a new pedestrian and cycle bridge (Kepax Bridge) across the River Severn in Worcester.

Both bridges aim to enhance links along the riverside, so users could complete a ’figure of 8’ circuit using the proposed Kepax Walking and Cycling Bridge, newly refurbished Sabrina Bridge and Diglis Bridge.

Diversions will be in place. The work is scheduled to finish by the end of the year.
