A MORETON-In-Marsh resident has completed an epic trek to raise thousands for charity.

Lord Andrew Hay decided to walk The Camino de Norte, one of the most historic routes in Europe that goes along Spain’s Atlantic coast and finishes at “The End of the World” in Finisterra.

Lord Hay had to postpone the walk to August, having originally planned to go in April before the coronavirus outbreak.

He covered up to 42 kilometres a day for 35 days, sometimes over tough terrain in 37C heat, and after successfully completing the challenge he arrived home on September 9.

The charity trek impressively raised more than £60,000 for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, which supports families with a seriously ill child.

He kept a blog while he did the trek and in one entry he wrote: "I reflected on all those who had supported me, those who were following me, the kind donors (the money was continuing to flow in) and the Rainbow Trust Family Support Workers and the families they cared for. I could not let them down.”

Lord Hay said: "I am so proud to have completed my 1,000km challenge and more importantly to have been able to support the wonderful Rainbow Trust. Thank you to all those who donated so generously and "thank you" to all the heroes at Rainbow Trust both at HQ and the amazing family support teams and the superb work they do.”

Zillah Bingley, Rainbow Trust chief executive, added: “We are thrilled that Andrew has safely completed his incredible trek, which he undertook to support the work of Rainbow Trust.

"His fundraising total currently sits at an amazing £63,500.

"This tremendous amount could fund all the costs of a Family Support Worker for one whole year, along with an additional 730 hours of support. From all of us at Rainbow Trust - and the families we support - we offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Andrew for all that he has achieved.”
