THE driver of a tanker who crashed through the central reservation of the M5 this week was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries.

The crash caused the M5 to be closed in both directions for much of September 23, and the driver’s injuries are not serious according to the ambulance service.

A West Midlands Ambulance spokesman said: “We were called by police at 10.27am to reports of an RTC involving a tanker on the M5 between junctions seven and six.

“The Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) attended the scene, along with an ambulance and paramedic officer.

“Crews have treated one man, the driver, for injuries not believed to be serious and he’s been taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment.”

The crash happened on the M5 northbound at around 10.30am between junctions 6 and 7 with the tanker coming to rest in the verge.

The motorway reopened at 3.30pm though one lane remained closed for the clean-up work to be completed due to a fuel spill caused by the crash.

A tweet from Highways England warned motorists to find another route, saying: “Please be aware - incident occurring M5 northbound J7 Whittington to J6 Warndon has also affected the southbound carriage J6 to J7 which is now closed.

“Your journey time will be affected and you are advised to find alternative route if possible. Police led incident.”
