WORK has begun to remove one of Worcester’s main pedestrian bridges. The main span of the Sabrina Bridge will be taken away with deteriorating wooden slats being replaced by a composite material chosen as it performs much better in wintery conditions than the current surface.

Once complete, the bridge deck will be returned and the bridge reopened.

Temporary traffic lights are in place on Hylton Road to allow the work to take place. Worcestershire County Council say it's "vital" the work is being carried out now before the winter. It is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.

The refurbishment is a key part of a major infrastructure programme that could also see a new pedestrian and cycle bridge (Kepax Bridge) across the River Severn in Worcester. Both bridges aim to enhance links along the riverside, so users could complete a ’figure of 8’ circuit using the proposed Kepax Walking and Cycling Bridge, newly refurbished Sabrina Bridge and Diglis Bridge.
