EMPTY shop fronts in the city centre have been transformed into an outdoor gallery showcasing the work of talented local artists.

The colourful project hopes to breathe new life into the city's vacant shops - which could otherwise be a bleak reminder of the damage caused by the ongoing pandemic.

The Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Jo Hodges, officially opened the gallery on Friday.

She said: “It was really nice to meet all of the artists; it is clear that they have created these artworks with the purpose of brightening up people’s lives.

“Each one is different and striking in its own right; I encourage people to come and enjoy them, as they are out and about in Worcester’s city centre.”

Councillor Adrian Gregson, vice chair of Worcester city council’s place and economic development subcommittee, said: “The arts have played a huge role during lockdown.

“As we recover from Covid-19 it is important that we continue to support the arts and local artists to play their role in the city’s recovery by creating and displaying work that engages and encourages people to return to the city centre and support the economy.”

Laura Worsfold, CEO Severn Arts, added: “We are really proud to be able to support artists and creative talent at this time and to bring some vibrancy back to Worcester’s empty shops to inspire and delight the people of Worcester as they return to work and the high street.”

Sam McCarthy, projects and marketing manager, Worcester Business Improvement District, said: “We are delighted to be working with such talented local artists to support the transformation of areas in the city centre where there are empty shops. As part of the city’s recovery it is important that projects like this take place to attract shoppers and visitors, while at the same time allowing social distancing.”
