A DECISION over whether to allow 33 affordable homes to be built in Evesham has been delayed over its “atrocious” design.

The plan by Bromford would see the homes built on land to the east of Offenham Road but some councillors were concerned about building another junction on the busy road.

Wychavon District Council’s planning committee agreed to defer a decision to allow for a rethink.

Cllr Frances Smith said: “I think too many entrances off one road which carries a lot of traffic, speeding, very heavy traffic, is absolutely ludicrous.

"The design is atrocious. I have no problem with the principle of houses being built here but I think the actual design is terrible.”

The design of the homes was also criticised by some members of the planning committee.

Cllr Rob Adams said the developer “could do better” and Cllr Tony Rowley added they were “dreadful.”

Council planning officers had recommended the plan should be approved when Wychavon District Council’s planning committee met last Thursday (October 15) and the county council’s highways department raised no objection.

The homes would be built near a new church and community centre if those plans are approved next month.

Bengeworth councillor Emma Stokes, who said it would be common sense to defer a decision, pleaded with her fellow councillors to “look at the bigger picture” and send the plans back to the drawing board.

She said an expensive roundabout had already been built near the proposed site which would be safer. “Why create an additional site entrance when one incredibly large and safe roundabout exists?” she added.

The committee voted in favour of deferring a decision by 12 votes to three.
