DROITWICH Spa High School has been forced into a complete shutdown today after teachers were revealed to have Covid-19.

Staff and parents of pupils at the Briar Mill school were told this morning that the school was having to close after two teachers contracted coronavirus, while a third had become symptomatic and was awaiting results of a test.

A message sent out to parents and posted on the school's website at 8am said: "School is CLOSED to ALL students today.

"This morning we’ve had two notifications that a teacher has tested positive and we have a 3rd symptomatic, awaiting results.

"In the timeframe we have we can’t ensure we can track and trace all the close contacts there may be so we’re closed today.

"As far as possible we will teach lessons on Teams."

"We will do minibus runs (per year group) for those that need them."

And in later updates is said pupils in years 10, 11, 12 and 13 had been receiving online teaching wherever possible today adding: "We are working now to identify which students may have been close contacts of the staff involved.

"We hope students will be staying inside today doing their work and in the next few hours we’ll be in contact with parents of any children who will need to isolate for longer."

On social media parents praised the school for it communications with them about the situation, Rob Guest writing: "Very impressed in the way that the high school got the message out so quickly.

"Although their clarity hasn’t been the best when sending emails of Covid cases, this morning was a credit to how quickly they do respond to a crisis."

The school first reported a case of coronavirus on October 8. In a letter sent to parents from headteacher Natalie Waters she said at the time: "You may already have heard that a member of the high school has tested positive for Covid-19.

"We have used the Public Health England guidelines to identify all the known close contacts of the person concerned and they are being asked to self-isolate."

The school was contacted for comment, but no one was available.

Dr Kathryn Cobain, Director for Public Health for Worcestershire said: “Three individuals from Droitwich Spa High School have tested positive for COVID-19.

“These cases were quickly identified, and the school is being supported by Public Health.

“Additional measures have been put in place to protect the school and help minimise any further disruption.

“As a precaution, all individuals in the affected classes have been told to remain away from school until after half term with some individuals being asked to self-isolate to for 14 days in line with guidance. They will all continue their learning online.

“The school will reopen open to staff and pupils tomorrow except those in the affected classes

“We will continue to work closely with the school.”
