SIR – Re the footage of young people gathering in the street after pub closing time. The pictures are pretty indistinct, but the numbers seen in the shots published hardly constitutes hordes.

Alright they appear to be standing fairly closely together, but quite a number of them seem to be wearing masks. Are they gathered there because they are queuing for takeaway food?

Whatever the reason I think that most young people have shown remarkable restraint and compliance during the past few months.

On a personal level any youngsters I have met whilst I have been out and about have been very careful to maintain their distance from me, and many wear masks whilst out in the open, as well as in enclosed spaces.

As a member of the older generation I would like to say a big thank you to the ‘hordes’ of young people who have given up such a lot to try and protect us ‘oldies’ when for the overwhelming majority of them the virus would have little if any impact on their health.
