Sir Cliff Richard has laughed off a fan's claim that he fathered a child in Brighton.

The singer, 80, appeared on Piers Morgan's Life Stories last night to speak about his life and career.

During the chat, Piers quizzed Sir Cliff on his fans.

He said: "I don't think there is anybody in pop history who has had fans quite like yours.

"Over the years your fans have shown their love for you in some unusual ways."

Piers then asked: "Have you had marriage proposals?"

Cliff responded: "Well yes in the early days. I've also had people claim I am the father of their child."

Piers quipped: "One woman wrote to you with the news you had fathered her child in Brighton," to which Cliff laughed and said: "I know, I was in Bournemouth that day."

As talk turned to his love life and speculation regarding his sexuality, Cliff opened up about his past girlfriends and admitted that he had never been heartbroken.

Of describing himself as an enigma, he said: "I love the word 'enigma' because it means that they don't really understands what you're really about."

Piers reeled off a list of names of his past lovers, including tennis star Sue Barker, who he said he "loved being with" but avoided saying that he had loved her.

He went on to say that there were several circumstances he "felt" as tough he were in love.

"In the case of Jackie Irving I went to my manager and said, 'If I got married, would I survive my fans?' He said, 'You might lose 25-30% of your fans.'

"I was like, 'You're kidding! I'd lose a 1/3?' I broke up with Jackie."

Piers was stunned, exclaiming: "Seriously?!"

"I can't make you understand," Cliff said.

Piers insisted: "No, I'm understanding, I'm just seeing a ruthless... even when you thought you were in love with a woman-"

"I did kiss her goodbye," Cliff intejected.

Piers continued: "Yet the moment you're told my your manager it might cost you a quarter of a third of your fans and success - bang, done! Not even a second thought! It's quite ruthless."

"It just means I wasn't in love enough with her," Cliff reasoned.

"But just because you can't understand it doesn't make me ruthless."

Sir Cliff also told Piers Morgan that he was embarrassed to go out after being wrongly accused of sexual abuse.

He won a privacy case against the BBC over coverage of a raid on his home in 2014.
