WORK is "progressing well" at Malvern's swimming baths, as a multi-million pound refurbishment continues.

The work at the Malvern Splash, due to be completed in 2021, is in its main phase, with large parts of the interior being stripped out ready to be replaced.

Cllr Peter Whatley, portfolio holder for resources at Malvern Hills District Council, said: "Refurbishment works are powering ahead in line with the project plan and budget.

"In the pool area, the new flume has arrived and installation is underway.

"Work on the changing areas has begun and will create much improved facilities. Externally, planning permission has been given for an anthracite grey colour scheme, providing a more harmonious appearance than the previous red.

"The gym remains open with suitable social distancing measures in place."

The refurb was given the green light back in January this year, and was brought forward during the coronavirus crisis, which saw pools across the country closed down.

Among the planned improvements are full refurbishment of the swimming pool changing rooms including dedicated changing facilities for people with disabilities and additional family changing areas.

There will also be a new interactive water play feature for younger swimmers and a new wave machine to enhance the experience for swimmers. The pool side area itself will also be revamped.

Cllr Tom Wells, responsible for community services at Malvern Hills District Council, said he was "delighted" to see the progress of the project.

He said: "It (the refurbishment) will give residents something to look forward to, with a much improved visitor experience, especially greater children’s activity areas.

"We will be delivering a fantastic new asset for our residents.

"The Splash is a facility at the heart of the health and well-being of our community.

"We have all struggled through the pandemic, but being able to get exercise improves both physical and mental health.

"I hope that the improvements we have been able to deliver will be enjoyed by all."

The £2million refurbishment of the Splash complex is set to be completed in January 2021, with Priory Road North car park unavailable to the public until the refurbishment is completed as it is accommodating the LST Projects site compound.
