THIS stunning image shows the revamp of Sabrina Bridge in the city as the old bridge is removed.

According to Worcestershire County Council, the work is being carried out now as it was “vital” to get it done before the winter months - its first refurbishment in 28 years.

The new bridge deck is a composite material which has been specifically chosen as it performs much better in wintery conditions than the current wooden slats.

Once complete, the bridge deck will be returned, and the bridge reopened.

The refurbishment is a key part of a major infrastructure programme that could also see a new pedestrian and cycle bridge (Kepax Bridge) across the River Severn in Worcester.

Both bridges aim to enhance links along the riverside, so users could complete a ’figure of 8’ circuit using the proposed Kepax Walking and Cycling Bridge, newly refurbished Sabrina Bridge and Diglis Bridge.

Sabrina Bridge was first opened in 1992, providing a link between the city centre to businesses, amenities and university buildings on the west side of the river.

Sabrina Bridge will be put back in place for access at the end of this year.

Ahead of the revamp at the start of the month, councillor Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “Once complete, the newly refurbished bridge, which will include repainted rails, ramps, stairs and main mast and brand-new decking will be much improved for all users."
