CURRENT and former colleagues have paid tribute to Jonathan Barry recalling his kindness, professionalism and sense of humour.

As we reported yesterday former Worcester News photographer Jonathan, aged 54, died after battling cancer for the last few months.

Former Worcester News editor Stewart Gilbert who appointed Jonathan said it was one of his “better decisions”.

Stewart said: “He was a great professional and great guy. Will be sorely missed by both Worcester News staff and the readers.”

His successor as editor, Kevin Ward, fondly recalled his popularity. He said: “Jonathan was a great photographer who always got the shots he wanted because of his knack of putting people at ease. JB was always at the centre of everything, totally reliable, incredibly talented, naturally funny, but most of all a kind, considerate and genuine family man. He was liked by everyone who met him, and there are not many who can say that.”

Photographers Sarah Jeynes, Paul Jackson and Marie Myers all remembered how he always looked after his staff.

He was also known fondly for calling everyone in the office “Dave” in the style of Trigger from hit TV comedy Only Fools and Horses.

Paul said: “Jonathan was a lovely bloke, always looked after us photographers, fought our corner when required and helped us if needed. Great photographer, picture editor and always ready to have a laugh.”

Sarah, who was deputy picture editor for two years, said: “I have some fond memories of sitting next to you each day. It was an honour to work with you. We had many laughs and silly times at the Worcester News. All the very best Dave. Love Dave x”

While Marie added: “A true gentleman, always optimistic, kind and funny. A fantastic guy to work for, who always fought our corner. Gone too soon Dave.”

Former Worcester News sports reporter Tom Guest also recalled his sense of humour.

He said: “A fantastic bloke, who embodied the true spirit, enthusiasm and gallows humour that is essential to thrive in a regional newsroom. All the very, very best Dave. RIP mate x”

While former Worcester News sports editor James Reece paid tribute to his photographic skills

He said: “He was someone you looked forward to seeing in the office every day. I can’t remember a bad word between us despite the stresses of the job sometimes. A fantastic guy and an excellent picture editor and photographer. He had such a talent for capturing a great image and putting people at ease when he was taking a photo. In the office he was very calm, kind and supportive.”

Former Worcester News local government reporter Tom Edwards recalled his calmness under pressure. He said: “My abiding memories would be all the late night election counts we covered, often up until 4am, working under immense pressure. He could always make you laugh, even at that time in the morning.”

Jonathan died in Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Saturday, November 7 surrounded by his family. He left wife Anita, aged 54, daughters Charlotte, 26, and Jennifer, 24, and a great number of people feeling totally numbed.
