A SIMPLE question asked by one of our members on the We grew up in Worcester Facebook page led to a barrage of responses and perhaps gave an idea of what we like while youngsters.

Jean Armstrong asked “What school trips do you remember and whereabouts did you sit on the coach?” and judging by the answers, it’s a wonder the coach ever managed to get moving, as hardly anyone ever seemed to be sitting at the front!

Annie Dunbar: “Wimbledon every year! Sat at the back.”

Matthew Widdowson: “The one that sticks in my mind the most was St Moritz-skiing around 1984! Sat at the back!”

Martin Davis: “Wembley with St Georges CE through late 70s/1980, 81: England v Scotland, England v Holland, England v Italy: always back of the bus.”

Emma Ellis: “Black Country Museum, Commandery and West Midland Safari park. Also the Forest of Dean and it rained the whole time. I wasn’t cool enough to get the back seats but do remember eating milk bottles.”

Anne-Marie Churchill went to Berkley Castle, Goodrich Castle and Symonds Yat. “Class 8 Rainbow Hill juniors and sat in the middle of the coach!”

Helen Davis: “I remember going to The Avoncroft Museum, and seeing the windmill.”

Marcus James posted: “On a school trip my schoolteacher wanted to kill us so made up walk up Pen y Fan in bleak weather!”

Kathleen Gardner posted: “Long weekend in 1956 in Aberdovey while at Sammies. In a youth hostel where the electric was turned off around 10pm. Creepy horrible place. Couldn’t wait to go home.”

Joanne Louise Bick went to Granada studios in Manchester, while Pauline Workman also went to the north-west: “Went to visit Liverpool in1964 with Sammies school trip. We went to see the Cavern where the Beatles played and went on a hovercraft over the Mersey, but got into trouble for dropping a banana skin down and the teacher went a cropper just before we got on the coach to go home.”

With an international flavour, Renee Goldberg posted: “Visiting Gettysburg. It was a long bus ride from Pittsburgh, where I am from.”

Jean Trussler matched her globetrotting: “London Airport, Chedworth Roman villa, hockey finals at Wembley, Switzerland, Venice and Rome”

Helen Pitt posted: “It’s hard to believe we went to Paris with a primary school group (St Stephens) But we did! Can’t remember how we got there tho’... But it was over 50 years ago!”

Sonia Simpson has clearer memories, adding: “Coach and ferry, Dover to Calais – and a very rough crossing on the return journey!”

Cliff Slade: “Interlaken in Switzerland in 1974 still the most awesome, beautiful country I have ever visited. Samuel Southall Grammar School – Thank you Mr Mills geography teacher!

Pat Burke: “Kandersteg in Switzerland 1958 with Nunnery Wood School.”

Tracey Skipp:” I did the Interlaken trip with Sammies in 1975/or 1976. So so beautiful! Went through the Eiger to get to the top of the Jungfrau! Awesome.”

Sharon Joy visited Slimbridge, the Lake District and France: “Always tried to get back seat even though my mum said it was safer in the middle.”

Eddie Ruff remembers going on the train to Portsmouth from Gorse Hill School in about 1965 while Sandra Gummery posted: £I can remember going to inkberry farm just outside Worcester couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so excited!”

Keith Giles: “Dudley Zoo, every b***** year in elementary and junior school! At CWBS though did get to go on a trip to Holland, Germany, Austria and Italy. I think it was 11 or 12 days and I sat near the front. I was 12, and got drunk for the first time in Germany, as did most of my friends!”

Paul Tulk remembers: “Stratford-upon-Avon, Silver Blades in Birmingham, London to see Swan Llake. Usually I sat down in the middle of the bus. I wasn’t welcome to sit with the cool people people at the back.”

Lynn Cassell: “Wimbledon to watch tennis it was a great day saw Jimmy Connors and and Ilie Nastase.”

And the person that started all this off? “Goodrich Castle at primary school,” said Jean Armstrong. “I remember the steps in the Keep gradually becoming narrower the higher up we climbed. And I usually sat at the front of coach – as I was travel sick.” That’s a feeling quite a few of us know!
