Oscar Saxelby-Lee was the clear choice to ask to lead Worcester’s virtual light switch on this year - and as a thank you, Visit Worcester asked Oscar and his mum Olivia what he would like as a Christmas wish from Santa.

Last night, the Visit Worcester team said they were delighted to buy some toys from Toytown in Crowngate, and arranged for Father Christmas to make a special undercover and socially distanced delivery to Oscar in the Crowngate sleigh.

Embodying the true spirit of Christmas, Oscar and his parents only accepted one of the presents, asking for the others to be donated to the paediatric oncology ward at Worcestershire Royal Hospital where Oscar was treated.

Residents were able to watch the very different Christmas lights switch on event last week.

A video was put together by Visit Worcester and screened last Thursday, which included footage of Oscar and the community switching on their lights.

Brave Oscar captured the hearts of the city as £500,000 was raised for a gruelling bone marrow transplant in Singapore after he was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

The St John’s schoolboy is now cancer free.

Sam McCarthy of Visit Worcester said: “We were only too delighted to make Oscar’s wish come true – he wanted to pass on the spirit of Christmas to some other children who are still being looked after by the amazing paediatric oncology team. Mike Lloyd from Crowngate was able to sneak in and safely watch Santa deliver the gifts from us. What a wonderful way to start Christmas month.”

Before the light switch on last week, Oscar's mum Olivia Saxelby, said: "Oscar's can't wait for Christmas. He's so excited, it's non-stop Santa chat in our house.

"We hope to see the streets lit to show just how strong our community spirit is."
