ROOFTOP Housing warned against putting non-flushable wipes down the toilet after dirty water and human faeces spilled back into flats at the weekend.

Residents of bottom-floor flats in Maryman’s Road, Hampton, Evesham, complained after the waste meant for the sewers bounced back, causing bathrooms and surrounding areas to flood.

Tenant Faye Barlow revealed similar issues had led to her and her neighbour having to use outdoor Portaloos before being put into temporary accommodation earlier this year.

However, the housing association insisted this blockage “was created by disposable wipes” and that the matter had been resolved having had trouble accessing the building over the weekend. Miss Barlow refuted the claims about access.

A Rooftop statement said an employee had visited two hours after the incident was first reported on Friday, December 18.

Having failed to fix the problem, specialist contractors visited on Saturday but were asked to leave the property “due to other issues” before being “refused entry by the tenant” on Sunday.

The problem was fixed on Monday, something Miss Barlow acknowledged.

David Guy, head of asset management for Rooftop, said “As there has been an drainage issue at the property before, we are committed to ensuring that the problem has been completely resolved and so we have requested that a CCTV survey of the pipework is done to ensure that there are no more problems with the drainage system.

“We advise that no one should flush disposable wipes or sanitary products as they do not break down in water and over a period of time they can clog up plumbing systems in a home, damage pipes and machinery at wastewater treatment plants.”
