CORONAVIRUS cases have surged in the West Midlands as the mutant virus strain has taken hold across the UK.

The latest data from Public Health England shows how Liverpool and the West Midlands have now overtaken the South East and East of England.

The West Midlands has seen cases rise from from 403.9 to 615.9 just seven days.

The top ten areas where Covid is rising fastest in England:

3. Liverpool

4. Sefton

5. Tendring

6. St Helens

7. Isle of White


9. Worcester

10. Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole

The case rate in Worcester has increased from 400.1 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to December 30 to 746.9 per 100,000 in the seven days to January 6.

It comes as Covid cases jumped by 46,169 and deaths rose by 529 yesterday.

There have now been 3,118,518 Brits infected with the disease since the pandemic began, and the total death toll has reached a staggering 81,960. The rise in cases is lower than it was last Monday, when 58,784 cases were recorded along with 407 deaths.
