PERSHORE Town Football Club has offered to open its doors for Covid-19 vaccinations after pensioners faced a 16-mile round trip for jabs.

Committee member Jacqui Marler revealed she had to take her 84-year-old mum to Upton for her first inoculation with available capacity limited in Pershore.

The town centre-based club was still awaiting a response from Worcestershire County Council's logistics team as Evesham Journal went press, seven days after the initial offer was made with Mrs Marler keen to get the ball rolling.

"We offered the club as a vaccine centre after I had to take my mother to Upton," said Mrs Marler.

"It was all very well organised and they are doing a brilliant job but she said to me that she knows a lot of people who do not drive and have no family locally who can drive them that far.

"Our facility is big and the car park can hold up to 60 cars and the club could even help with volunteers as some of the committee members have been furloughed from day jobs.

"The position of the club in the town is fantastic, many people could walk to it.

"They came back to me to say the logistics team would be in touch but nobody has come back yet."

On the importance of getting increased numbers of vaccinations done in Pershore, Mrs Marler added: "I think it is crucial, this is a town with a lot of elderly people.

"I know it is hard for the doctor's surgeries at the minute, the one at Abbotswood Medical Centre has a small car park, hence why they are doing jabs over in Upton.

"We have the Asda car park near the football club as well so it would be a great spot.

"We have put in 12 electronic hand sanitisers so it would be ready if they wanted to use it.

"It is about easy access and us doing our bit as a community football club. We don't want it to just sit there empty."
