AN abusive carer threatened to burn his partner, her mum and her home but she says she still loves him and he is ‘a good man’ underneath.

Jason Cartwright had been in a two year relationship with his partner when he left her voicemail and WhatsApp messages telling her he would ‘burn her, burn her house, burn her mum’. The 34-year-old of Rodborough Drive, Worcester, admitted harassment in breach of a restraining order following the incident on September 24 last year. The order was imposed on July 15 last year for battery and two counts of criminal damage.

In her initial victim personal statement the victim said that the defendant ‘played on her vulnerabilities’ and that his threats aggravated her mental health issues, causing her sleep loss and worry about potentially having to give evidence in court.

However, in a further statement she said: “I believe in second chances. I believe he just made a mistake which he regretted straight away. Please allow Jason to be in my life if he chooses to. When this mistake happened I was extremely stressed and in a bad place mentally and worrying about Jason.

“Jason really is a good man. He just needs support. I would be honoured if you give Jason a second chance so we can both learn from this absolute nightmare.”

The woman also told the court she has suffered a further mental health breakdown while Cartwright was in custody and that he had given up his job to care for her. Judge James Burbidge QC, the Recorder of Worcester, said Cartwright was ‘fortunate she let her heart rule her head’. “It’s clear from the statement she has urged upon me as the sentencing judge that she loves you. Any independent observer watching your behaviour from a distance towards her would wonder how on earth she could love you, how on earth she could say to the court ‘please, give him another chance’ because you have abused her. You have abused her in a number of ways which you should not do in any event but especially with her mental health issues. She has real issues. She has suffered mental health breakdowns in the past. She says your incarceration has caused a further mental health breakdown.”

The judge jailed him for six months although time served in custody will mean he is released immediately. No restraining order was made because the judge said the victim did not want one.
