TWO charity workers are looking to take on a 260 mile journey in order to highlight the perils many rough sleepers face when stuck outside in sub-zero conditions.

Oleg Mitchell and Rick Mason will walk the Pennine Way from start to finish in a bid to show the horrors facing rough sleepers.

The pair had to cancel a January trip due to the coronavirus lockdown, but Oleg says they will look to complete the trek - one which they have done before - as soon as they can once lockdown comes to an end.

Oleg said: “We just wanted to raise some money and highlight the terrors that rough sleepers can go through being out in sub zero temperatures.

“Rick and I have been doing these walks for 20 years to raise awareness.

“The walks can be tough, but it depends on the environment, but because we are now well equipped having done the walks before it’s not too challenging, but for people who are rough sleeping out on the streets in sub zero temperatures that’s very challenging.

“We hope to do it straight after lockdown, as soon as we are able to.”

The duo work for Caring for Communities and People (CCP) in Worcester, which aims to help prevent homelessness.

The challenge will see them begin in Edale, North Derbyshire, and finish in Kirk Yetholm, Scotland and includes camping in the wild.

Rick and Oleg will aim to complete the journey in less than two weeks, keeping a diary, taking pictures and videos along the way.

After achieving a masters degree in medicine, Oleg joined CCP as an outreach worker, along with Rick, working with the Fownes Hotel in Worcester and the council to try to get accommodation for the city's homeless people.

Oleg, who now works as a manger for CCP, says he and Rick are aiming to raise £500 for the charity when they take on the walk.

So far they have raised more than £300.
