COUNCILLORS will be meeting next to make an important decision about the future of the city's eyesore former Sansome Walk swimming pool.

Worcester City Council says it has found a preferred developer to turn the asbestos-ridden pool into homes after years of discussions and planning.

A decision is due to be made by the council's key policy and resources committee but will be held in secret due to, as the council says, the presence of commercially sensitive information in reports.

But a city council spokesman has said the developer would be revealed “in the next few weeks.”

Councillors will also be voting on adding another £454,000 to the remedial work fund so the land can be prepared for building once it has been demolished.

Demolition has been hit by several delays since closing just over four years ago.

The derelict swimming pool was due to be demolished in early 2019 but work was delayed to due to a higher-than-expected amount of asbestos was found.

The council is now saying the building will be demolished by September 2021 but the homes will not be built until 2024.

The council awarded DSM Demolition the £1.3 million contract for demolishing the former swimming pool at the end of last year.
