SERGEANT Sarah Kent has revealed some of those fined at an illegal car meet in Droitwich had travelled “significant distances” to attend.

And Sgt Kent said although the vast majority of the public are following Covid lockdown rules, a minority are still breaking them.

We previously reported that West Mercia Police took action against those who took part in the event, including a nurse, at around 11pm on the night of Sunday, January 14, despite lockdown instructions to stay at home and only to leave for an essential reason.

Although meet ups are not illegal when not in a lockdown, meet ups are often treated as antisocial behaviour by police.

During her policing report to Droitwich Town Council on Monday Sgt Kent said: “One issue mentioned previously is road racing vehicles that occasionally takes place on the A442.

“I was disappointed to see cars attended this location on the evening of Sunday, January 11, with the intention of racing on the road.

“Cars were congregating and officers attended promptly.

“Fourteen people were reported for breaching Covid regulations with summary fines, some having travelled significant distances across the West Midlands in order to attend.

“Other traffic matters were also dealt with at the same incident.

“This anti social and somewhat dangerous behaviour is a priority for the Droitwich team, and we are using a multi agency problem solving approach dealing with it both in the short and long term.”

On the general following on lockdown rules, Sgt Kent said: “In the same pattern as other lockdowns criminal offences and activity have reduced in number, leaving us more time to deal with reported breaches of Covid legislation.

“The majority of the community continue to follow the rules and comply but a minority unfortunately continue to breach them.”
