A FLOOD warning where “immediate action is required” remains in place in Bredon despite the River Avon’s levels beginning to drop.

Widespread flooding has hit the Evesham area over the past few days and while there is some relief at levels peaking last night (Sunday, January 31), forecast rain would bring with it more problems.

As things stands, a flood alert – which warns the public to “be prepared” is active around Evesham and moving south but the warning kicks in as water heads down into already troubled areas.

A Flood Warning Information Services (FWIS) statement read: “River levels remain high but are falling at the Bredon gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.

Consequently, flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected to continue.

“We expect flooding to be affecting properties and roads around Mill Lane, Strensham and the Dock Lane area of Bredon.

“The Evesham River gauge peaked at 3.24m on Sunday morning and the Bredon river gauge peaked at 3.32m on Sunday evening.

“Further rain is expected throughout this week. We are continuing to monitor the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences.

“Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”

The alert for Evesham reads: “Flooding of roads and farmland continues. Flooding is affecting low lying land and roads adjacent to the River Avon from Abbotts Salford to Tewkesbury.

“Other locations that may be affected include Offenham, Evesham, Twyning and the Eckington Road. Mill Bank Road from Jubilee Bridge to Fladbury is impacted.

“Further rain is forecast Tuesday into Wednesday and again on Thursday.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences.

“Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”

Updates on both are expected later today.

The Met Office anticipates heavy rain through the night and into Tuesday morning in Evesham with more sporadic showers to follow on Wednesday.

Worcester News:

Current forecasts do not indicate the area will suffer from the rain and snowfall expected in central areas of the UK later this week, although it remains to be seen whether flooding farther north and weather warnings in those regions has a knock-on effect for the Avon.
