A NEW city testing centre ‘dedicated to identifying cases of the new South African variant of Covid-19’ has opened at Worcester Sixways today.

Over the weekend, testing has been carried out at the White Hart on Droitwich Road for people "living and working" in the WR3 area the city - but all slots were quickly filled.

A statement on the Worcestershire County Council's website stated: "Due to a huge response from the community, appointments at Fernhill Heath are now full and no more bookings are being taken while the site gets up to capacity and opens fully early next week.

"A second testing site will open on Monday at Sixways stadium. This is also for residents of the identified postcodes, and only for people who have no symptoms and who are over 18 years old.

The South Africa variant is not thought to be any more dangerous than others circulating in the UK but there are concerns it can spread more readily and vaccines may not work quite as well against it.
