ONE of the main pedestrian routes across the Severn in Worcester is closed throughout this week as the final details are added to its refurbishment.

Sabrina Bridge will be shut for up to five days while "finishing touches" are put in place, according to Worcestershire County Council.

The bridge, which was originally closed late last year, has been extensively refurbished for the first time in its history.

New details include a newer and more weather-resistant composite surface, designed to cope better with the winter weather in particular.

The finishing touches to take place this week include installing bridge dampers, which reduce its movement and completion of works on the steps on both sides of the river.

Additional landscaping works and final checks will also be carried out.

The installation work was unable to be done ahead of the opening last month due to a delay in receiving the parts from the supplier due to Covid-19 related issues.

Cllr Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “Since opening at the end of January, it’s great to see that Sabrina Bridge has been very well used by pedestrians and cyclists and we’ve had really positive feedback about the improvements.

“These final works, which we alluded to when we announced the opening, will be the finishing touches to the extensive refurbishment which has made a drastic improvement to this very well used river crossing. We’re planning to get the bridge back open before schools are set to return from March 8.

“The improvements to this bridge are part of our wider plans to enhance walking and cycling routes, not only in Worcester but throughout the county.”

The bridge finally re-opened on January 28 following the work, which was delayed several times by bad weather and rising river levels caused by Storm Christoph.
