HOUSEHOLD Recycling Centres across Worcestershire had to temporarily close due to the sheer mass of people trying to use them over the weekend.

We received multiple reports of long queues along Bilford Road in Worcester on Saturday, with one resident particularly concerned by vehicles driving on the wrong side of the road to overtake.

Lynsey Drake, who lives near the tip, said: “On Saturday I twice had to queue to drive past the recycling centre. On both occasions I witnessed drivers going around the pedestrian crossing on the wrong side of the road, including a bus.

"The constant weekend chaos is both frustrating as a local resident but also a serious safety issue. This situation is an accident waiting to happen and needs urgently addressing.

"I have contacted the council this weekend to once again report my concerns".

County councillor Tony Miller, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We would encourage our residents to stay at home whilst we remain in lockdown and store their waste, where possible.

"The recent spell of good weather has provided an opportunity to work in our gardens, and we are aware that all Household Recycling Centres across Worcestershire were extremely busy over the weekend.

"The sites at Droitwich and Pershore sites had to temporarily close for a short period of time and Bilford Road was closed Monday morning due to volumes of traffic.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we are progressing options for traffic management arrangements at our centres.”
