A 36-year-old Worcester man is accused of knocking his partner out with a vacuum cleaner, possession of knives and controlling behaviour.

Christopher Holder of Swallowfields, Warndon Villages, Worcester, who denies a total of nine counts appeared at Worcester Crown Court on Monday.

The 36-year-old faces a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship, two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two common assaults, two charges of possession of an offensive weapon (knives), one of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and one of driving while disqualified.

The trial could not proceed on the day agreed (Wednesday) and was therefore adjourned until May 17. The trial is expected to last three days.

Andrew Wallace, prosecuting, said the case involved allegations that the defendant had used items to knock the female complainant unconscious, including by throwing a vacuum cleaner at her which was described in court as a ‘Hoover’. Another allegation involves her being knocked out when her head is said to have struck a fireplace.

Judge James Burbidge QC heard the case. He said: "These charges are extremely serious."

Jason Aris appeared for Holder.

The defendant was refused bail and the custody time limit was extended until May 21.
