I WASN’T built to be a dancer (this will be a fairly obvious statement to those who know me!)

Even allowing for not having the perfect dancing figure, I am absolutely rubbish at it.

I can offer an explanation for this, however. From about the age of nine, I was a drummer and remained so until about 10 years ago when to everyone’s relief, I gave it up.

I played in a dance band for many years (you’ll see where this is going now) and of course I was playing for people to dance rather than dancing myself. Well, that’s my excuse anyway.

I genuinely love watching dancing – I think it is one of the finest expressions of human emotion, the human condition and indeed the human soul.

Watching people tell stories and express emotions through movement seems absolutely right and was probably the earliest form of all the performing arts.

If you are not sure about the power of dance and the ability to express yourself through it, and haven’t seen the film Billy Elliot, please watch it.

It is, in my humble opinion, one of the best films ever made, and if you can watch it without crying it will be an amazing feat.

I watch it at least twice a year, particularly when I’m feeling low – it’s a real ‘feel-good’ movie.
