SIR – In a speech a few years ago the former PM, David Cameron, stated that lobbying was a cancer that needed to be removed from politics.

It is therefore interesting that the same David Cameron is now embroiled in a scandal about the very same thing.

Perhaps this should not be too surprising given the tendency of politicians to say one thing and do something completely different.

However, what is surprising is a that a recent opinion poll suggests that very few people are actually interested in the current debate about lobbying, which prompted me to question why.

Sadly, the only conclusion I can draw is that as too many people routinely believe politicians behave in this way the public now routinely accepts this is quite normal behaviour for our political elite.

If indeed this is the case it creates a dangerous situation since once politicians accept an indifferent response from the electorate is also the norm, then it permits a much greater opportunity to get away with even worse transgressions of behaviour.
