WORCESTERSHIRE fans, clubs and politicians have joined the backlash against the proposed European Super League.

Six English clubs have announced they have joined 12 major European clubs to be part of a new breakaway league, which has been condemned by the wider football community.

Worcester’s Liverpool supporters group has hit out at the owners of its football group, which has signed up to the plan, saying: “Unfortunately everything to do with football now is about greed, and it’s us the fans that are to blame.

"We put up with stupid kick off times ridiculous amounts of matches expensive ticket prices, the financial fair play fiasco,VAR, and some players earning more in a day than a lot of fans make in a year. Football stopped being about supporters the day the Premier League was formed.

"The whole thing is just pure greed from the owners.”

Worcester City tweeted a picture of their players in a huddle adding: “Billionaires and their-self interests, they think football is all about them.

"Well, it’s not.

"Super League? Na you’re alright.

"We know where proper football lives. Support your local club, they’ll welcome you with open arms.”

Worcester Raiders tweeted: “Who is for supporting real football at Sixways Stadium next season,” and Bromsgrove Sporting tweeted: “Support non league. Support real football.”

Nigel Huddleston, MP for Mid Worcestershire who is a minister for sport in the government, said: “The interests of football fans and a dynamic, fair and competitive football ecosystem are our priorities.

"A European Super League could undermine this and would create a closed shop at the top of our national game. It would be deeply damaging for football and could destroy the football pyramid where funds from the globally successful Premier League flow into local communities.

"We support football authorities in taking action and the clubs involved must answer to their fans and the wider footballing community before taking any further steps.”
