THE city’s ukulele club has been listed as one of the top clubs in the world.

The Worcester Ukulele Club has been placed at number seven in ukulelesreview.com’s list of the top 29 such clubs in the world.

This is the second time the club has been cited, being selected among the top 20 in 2017.

On the website’s review, it says: “The Worcester Ukulele Club started its journey in 2010 with six members.

"At present, the number of members is over 100 on the club’s mailing list. The club is directed by an annually elected committee.

“The members of this club meet every Monday. The club welcomes all the new and old ukulele players.

“The club arranges around 70 gigs each year. The money which is collected from the gigs goes to charity.

“The club publishes the updated news on its Facebook page. For download, there are many songbooks on the club’s website which is arranged alphabetically.”

Founder member Colin Box said: “We are not entirely sure how ukulelesreview.com compiled it’s list of the top 29 ukulele clubs in the world.

"Their information is slightly out of date because we played over 100 gigs in the year before Covid and our YouTube channel now has more than 250 play along videos.

“We are listed as club number 7 in this review (and were listed at 13 in the previous review).

"We’re not sure whether the list is intended to be in ranking order or not although in my mind it can’t be in ranking order or else Worcester Ukulele Club would be number one.”

In 2019 the club raised more than £11,000 for its chosen charity for the year – Worcester and District Branch of Parkinson’s UK.

Members played in more than 100 gigs. Last year and this year the club’s charity has been Alzheimer’s Research UK and, despite lockdown and having to play on Zoom, members have raised more than £6,000.
