IAN Cranston’s letter bemoaning the official response to his complaint over the state of the handrails on the Diglis bridge earned plenty of support from from our readers.

Commenting on the Worcester News website, Hard on said: "Completely agree, many of them have rotted away and are well beyond repair. If they had used a good quality wood designed for outdoor use such as Iroko then it would be is a good state."

FantasyNews said: "As per usual buy cheap pay many times over. All these grand ideas fall in to disrepair as none have a forecast maintenance schedule, hence the Sabrina bridge repairs and now this."

Redhillman extended the chain of thought, saying: "It is not beyond reason to question how sturdy and safe the new footbridges over parts of the A4440 around Worcester are, and indeed the widened Carrington Bridge too.

"Especially when Diglis Bridge is now showing signs of deterioration after only 10 years and a complete rebuild of Sabrina Bridge was undertaken after just 25 years of use."

LastChanceSaloon added: "A stitch in time saves nine – old sayings like that are so true and so easily dismissed by those who think they know better because they have some letters after their name."

But an exasperated Worcester4life commented: "If this is all you have to focus your time on life must be good!

"No one cares. There are far more pressing matters in the world right now than a bit of bent wood. Get a grip!"

LIGHTS CONCERN: The junction of the A38 Droitwich Road and Hurst Lane in Fernhill Heath

LIGHTS CONCERN: The junction of the A38 Droitwich Road and Hurst Lane in Fernhill Heath

Earlier in the week, Kelly Bourne's letter regarding the traffic lights in Fernhill Heath at the junction of the Droitwich Road and Hurst Lane also formed the basis for a discussion.

Jabbadad said: "The traffic lights on Bromyard road Watery Lane are similar with a main road (Bromyard Road ) and Watery Lane a side road, and they seem to be on demand (as you approach) and I use both roads and never seem to wait long ether way.

"So why can't this system apply in Fernhill Heath?"

Rambler commented: "Questions need to be asked why we have the temporary lights in the first place, then why are they there and the permanent lights are out of use, how long will they be there and finally how much of tax payers' money will be spent on this and to pay for a man to sit in a van all day to monitor the temporary lights?"

Tekanis responded: "This is not tax payers' money, the full cost is borne by Taylor Wimpy, the developers responsible for The Shire on Dilmore Lane, Fernhill Heath.

"Again, the contractors have not completed the required works and this junction cannot be adopted by the county council until the work reaches the standard which is acceptable to the county.

"I am not a councillor, but take an interest in how these decisions come to fruition. I feel for those travelling along the A38, but even more so I feel extremely sorry for those live on The Shire estate as the roads and pathways have all got to be replaced. They are in an appalling state."

CivilsMan remained unimpressed.

"Firstly, the contractor did complete the required work.

"Secondly, there's multiple ways this junction could be have been designed differently.

"Ultimately, were the works really necessary? I think not."
