ABBY Sabel’s Wonderland Works is in the business of running in tandem with nature, inspired by the beautiful countryside and the animals, nature and wildlife that live in and around it.

Abby, who has been in business at her Bewdley base for five years, said: “I use everyday plain homeware and throwaway items and up-cycle/recycle them to give a new purpose and items that can be treasured for life.

“I use the Kilner kitchenware brand to add some class and uniqueness to kitchens, along with various fair trade products where I can.

“Using various designs from popular bees and highland cows, to designer floral patterns. One of my favourite mediums to work with is natural game bird feathers.

“I’m given these from various kind people who would normally just throw them away. I bring them to life to show their full potential by adding them to hand cut, country animal and bird silhouettes. These are turned into framed pieces for people to hang around their home to add a part of the countryside into their lives.

“My aim is to give everyone the opportunity to have a part of nature in their home. I believe nature and wildlife helps people with mental health issues and I realise that not everyone has the same privilege as I do.

“I have many memorable and proud moments throughout the years of running my business, but it is always the smallest of things that stand out the most.

“When I have a stall at a country show, it is hard to take the time to have a breather but in the rare chance you get one, I love to people watch.

“A lot of people will attend events such as these with friends and family and it is lovely to see. I have had two occasions at two different events where one person from a party will come running up to me and grab something, throw it at me and say ‘Shh, be quick please! I’m buying this for my friend/sister and it’s a surprise. She just loved it so much.’

“The customer then swaggers away to their friend/sister and passes over my recognisable brown paper bag, the recipient takes a peek inside and the biggest of hugs are exchanged together.

“It really chokes me when I see this and it fills me with so much joy. This is why I love my job.

“I have had many strange requests and odd situations through the years. From turning wooden ducks into chickens, using someone’s dead dog fur to create a silhouetted frame, word art prints using a foreign language and over 100 words.

“Yes – I did create all of these things, am I mad? I really must be! I have recently attended smaller markets due to Covid and have had passers by ask if part of my display was for sale and on many occasions, I have had a lot of people just stand and talk to me about their everyday problems!

“I left school half a year early due to ill health, depression and anxiety which I still suffer with to this day.

“After years of trying various jobs which I could not settle in to I decided I wanted to grow my own business. I have the help and support from my family who have always been there for me.

“I wanted to work doing something that I loved and something I was passionate about - it has always been to do something creative. I am self taught with everything I have made with nothing but the odd YouTube tutorial.

“I soon got the crafting bug and extended to decoupage – which is now my speciality and my main craft. I find it relaxing and to be able to combine my love of art and animals is just a dream come true.

“You can find me locally around the area attending various shows and farmers’ markets.

“This is my favourite part of Wonderland Works, I get to meet my fans, followers and customers and have the potential to make new and lasting friendships doing what I love the most.”
