Video footage of the incident, posted to social media, attracted a barrage of outrage.

Here’s what we know so far.

THE VIDEO

The 30-second video shows the woman shoving the doorman before launching a racist tirade, including using the n-word, and spitting towards him as she walks away.

The incident then ends with her walking away, swearing in the bouncer’s direction and using racist language, while other members of the public look on.

THE BACKLASH

Quotes attributed to the doorman, which accompanied the video online, read: “I haven’t been doing security for years like some, but in the short time I’ve been doing it I’ve seen and been through pretty much anything there is to see and go through.

“This, however, is something I or anyone who looks like me shouldn’t have to go through.

“There was a time I’d go through things like this and brush it under the carpet but them times are over.”

The woman was then named on social media with her Facebook profile hunted down, which included her employment status as working at Worcester Bosch.

The company said the woman had been dismissed by its cleaning contractor three years ago.

West Midlands Police were quick to comment publicly and a 24-year-old woman was arrested on Monday (May 24).

THE ARREST

A West Midlands Police statement read: “We’ve arrested a woman on suspicion of racially abusing a pub doorman in Birmingham city centre on Saturday night (May 22).

“The woman was detained at 1pm today after she attended a police station at our request.

“It is alleged the 24-year-old, from Worcester, used racist language towards the member of security staff outside the Figure of Eight in Broad Street at some time between 10pm and 11.30pm.

“She is also accused of racially abusing another man who was stood near the pub entrance and earlier damaging furniture inside the premises.

“She remains in police custody for questioning.”

Birmingham police chief inspector James Spencer said: "It’s an awful incident and people are understandably disgusted.

“We said we would prioritise the investigation and that’s now led to the swift arrest of a suspect.

"Our city centre police teams have been working hard with local businesses to make the city a safe and enjoyable place to visit.

“Racist behaviour is completely unacceptable and we are taking this report very seriously.

“We are still in the process of trying to contact the victim and we would urge him to get in touch as soon as possible so we can take a statement."

THE RESPONSE

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon claimed the woman had been ejected from the premises due to her behaviour and that she would be “barred for life” as well as being subjected to police investigation.

“We can confirm the incident took place outside the pub on Saturday night,” said a spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon.

“The woman in question had been ejected for her behaviour. She spat her drink towards the member of door staff and also racially abused him.

“She also caused issues as she was leaving. This behaviour is completely unacceptable and the woman is barred for life.

“We will also be pursuing her for criminal damage and passing on the CCTV and bodycam footage to the police.”

Heath Curley, a regional manager for JD Wetherspoon, added: “The woman had been in the pub but we didn’t like her behaviour so she was asked to leave.

“As she was being escorted outside she knocked over furniture, including chairs.

“Once outside, the doorman closed the door but the woman began kicking the door and cracked the glass.

“She then subjected him to racial abuse as can be seen on the video.

“All credit to the doorman who acted very calmly, he’s a very nice fellow and this was certainly something he shouldn’t be exposed to.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to racist abuse against any of our staff and are treating this incident very, very seriously.

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and this woman will not be welcome in any Wetherspoon pubs in the city centre again.”

Statements from social media accounts attributed to the woman, apologising for her actions, have popped up but it has yet to be verified whether the comments have come from the alleged perpetrator.
