YOUR usually united Worcester News team has been split as Euro 2020 football fever has taken over our office.
Noa Rakic and Oliver Lewis, from our advertising team, have divided loyalties for the opening game of Group D, England v Croatia.
Devoted Three Lions fan Olly will be among the millions cheering on England in the 2pm game on Sunday, but is at loggerheads with colleague Noa Rakic, who hails from Croatia.
England are favourites to win the clash as they have home advantage with the match at Wembley.
But, as Noa points out, Croatia have a “fantastic team” having overcome England at the semi final of the World Cup three years ago.
Noa said: “Croatian fans are very patriotic.
“They are insane about their team. When they got to the final everybody was out on the streets, cars beeping their horns.
“Despite some of the players leaving like Mandzukic, the team still have big players, and my favourite Ivan Perisic.
“I’ll be cheering them on at home, the weather should be good, I’ll maybe enjoy a little BBQ.
“Back home, I’m not sure how many do this, when I was a kid I used to watch the football with my dad, he would have a beer but the main thing to have was pretzels.
“When it comes to sports our nation really comes together and we have confidence in our team. I’m going for a 1-0 Croatia win.”
However, Olly says he has full confidence in England’s chances on Sunday, and for the tournament.
“Southgate has brought through many young players,” he said.
“I want to see Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka get their chance now.
“It is a solid squad and England having options off the bench is great to see, having a player like Dominic Calvert -Lewin to bring on if you need a goal.
“With Coady and Mings there are options in defence too. I’m planning to watch at a city pub, which will ensure a good atmosphere.
“I think we will win Sunday, I’m going 2-1.”
England games at the group stage are all at Wembley, with them facing ‘Auld enemy’ Scotland this Friday, June 18, at 8pm before the final group game against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, June 22.
