A Worcester restaurant has managed to top the TripAdvisor list — despite being in the city's 'unluckiest' spot.

Greek restaurant Island is currently number one out of 229 eateries in the city having seemingly broken the location's supposed "curse".

Owner Alexandros Arvanitis said he was delighted at reaching the top spot and put its success down to home-cooking and happy customers.

The restaurant at 36 Broad Street has been home to many cafes and restaurants over the years.

Recently, they include Yamass, Dine Dessert, Air Cafe Bar, Asilah Lounge and Dunkies Diner.

However, Mr Arvanitis is determined to continue his great success at the site which has earned the restaurant a coveted five stars on the review site.

"One of the first customers we had asked how long we were going to be staying because they said this corner seems unlucky for previous restaurants.

"But we are here to stay - though nothing is certain in this life I guess."

Experience has, perhaps, taught them that as the restaurant opened on Decemember 17, 2019, a few months before the pandemic.

They operated for seven months, turning to takeaways for a short time during lockdown, before deciding to close.

Since reopening in May, Island has been busier than ever with July almost fully booked and plans to close in August so the family can return to Greece for a month.

They have been so busy that Mr Arvanitis had not realised the restaurant had earned the top spot.

"We are a family business so we have many things we have to do everyday and I don't have time to stay on TripAdvisor for two minutes.

"We reopened May 17 and we were number 17 then a few weeks later my daughter looked and we were number five.

"Before we knew it my daughter was excitedly telling me we were number one."

Every day Mr Arvanitis and short order cook Tasos Barkas make six to eight fresh mousakkas and it is 'first come, first served' to get a slice.

"We follow my wife's grandmother's recipes. She's an excellent cook and so is my wife."

They plan to reopen in early September, welcoming back customers and trying to maintain their top TripAdvisor rating.

"Though we know it is a tough thing to keep," he added.
