Supermarket customers have continued to wear masks despite the lifting of restrictions.

Customers at Waitrose Worcester almost all continued to wear face coverings despite the government lifting restrictions.

A staff member at the branch said: “99 per cent of customers are still wearing masks.

“It is recommended that we request customers to wear masks, but you do not have to.

“I think it will be a gradual thing especially as we (the staff) are all still wearing them whether that’s on the tills, around the shop or in the backrooms.”

They added: “There was one nice gentleman who came in without a mask and he was concerned that he was still meant to be as everyone else did.”

For many of the customers who visited the shop on Monday morning, wearing a mask in an enclosed space has just become second nature.

One said: “It’s habit. I’m just used to wearing it now.”

Another added: “I still believe we should wear masks when mingling with people we don’t know. All of my family agree. None of us are going on holiday for that reason.

“I don’t believe the government have really broadcast it well enough. It is just respectful to wear a mask.”

For other customers the decision was more personal.

One shopper said: “I’m wearing it because my mum is in hospital, and I want to make sure that I am doing everything I can so I am allowed to visit her.

“It is sensible. We have to learn to live with this thing.”

Another said: “I wear it for the people who work here. It doesn’t do me any harm.”

One couple differed in their opinion with one opting to wear a mask while the other did not.

The customer who decided not to wear a mask said: “I have been fully vaccinated and have antibodies and I am testing every month.

“I will be choosing where I feel comfortable wearing a mask or not.”

His partner added: “I wear it for the other people, to make them feel comfortable.”
