METAL Box would have 90 years old this year, the firm originally having been opened by Viscount Cobham, the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire on May 27 1931, making it the first Metal Box factory to make the now traditional “baked bean tin”.
Sadly, one of Worcester’s most famous names in the 20th century is no longer with us. By then known as Carnaud Metalbox, which used to make cans for some of the biggest names in the food and drink industry, closed down in 2013 with the loss of 118 jobs.
One of our members on our We grew up in Worcester page on Facebook shared a picture earlier this year and brought back so many good memories for people, that it seemed like a good idea to share a few more, including some sent to the Worcester News when the end was nigh for the Perrywood business.
