PROBLEMS with cars parked on Fort Royal Hill will be exacerbated when London Road yellow lines come into force, fear residents.

Resident Penny Perrett said Fort Royal Hill is already used by commuters and shoppers looking to park near the city centre for free.

She worries that the issue will be even worse when the yellow lines are added outside homes on London Road.

The yellow lines will be added temporarily on the road to measure whether they ease congestion.

Yellow lines are also being added temporarily to Bromyard Road and permanently to Droitwich Road.

Worcestershire County Council said it will monitor the impact on neighbouring roads for six months.

Neighbours in London Road put a petition together when the plans were first mooted at the start of the year and believed they had been dropped completely.

"There are so many reasons why restricting parking on the London Road is a bad idea.

"The county council say it will reduce congestion.

Worcester News:

"But congestion will only be reduced when the council follows other areas of the country and reduces vehicular access to the city in line with government policy and increases opportunities for cyclists and pedestrians to travel safely.

"Residents living on London Road near the Fort Royal Hill junction will have nowhere to park their vehicles during the day.

"So more cars will park on local roads where residents already have to deal with commuters and shoppers who park for free.

"In addition, the proposed changes to the road will make it easier for vehicles to turn into Fort Royal Hill, already a busy rat run and a very narrow residential street."

London Road will have two sets of 'no waiting' lines near houses numbered 57 to just past 65 and a second section near 162a to 174.

Lynn Denham, Cathedral ward city councillor, said: "The yellow lines will go outside people's homes who have nowhere else to park.

"The surrounding areas are already chock a block with parking so it is already a problem."

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “Congestion is a key priority for Worcestershire County Council.

"We are looking to put in place some additional single yellow lines on Bromyard Road, London Road and Droitwich Road to improve traffic flows in Worcester.

“This is an experimental Traffic Regulation Order which we will monitor and review the impact after six months, including displaced parking to the surrounding roads.

“On Droitwich Road the Traffic Regulation Order is a permanent order.

"This was progressed through the public consultation stage without objections.”
