A HIGH Street icon could soon be about to return to Worcester.

The Golden Lion, which once sat on the wall of what it now Costa in the city, is still on the agenda to be replaced after it was damaged by a storm in 2019.

A Costa spokesman confirmed there was no exact date for the return of the statue, saying it was still with craftsmen.

In 2019 we reported how the statue had fallen off the wall of the building, located opposite the Guildhall, and was in need of repair.

Its head had mostly disintegrated, with Worcester City Council confirming it would be sent away for repair or possible replacement.

At the time, a city council spokesman said: "We are currently working with those responsible for the maintenance of the Costa Coffee premises (formerly the Golden Lion pub) in High Street and advising them on what is required to restore the Golden Lion figure on the frontage."

It is believed that the Golden Lion, located in the high street opposite the Guildhall, existed as a pub from at least the 16th Century.

The grade II listed building was once a mediaeval merchant’s house believed to have been built in the late 14th or early 15th century.

The lion was previously removed back in 2010 for restoration after falling into a state of disrepair.

Before that, it had last been restored in 1990.
