Worcestershire is lighting up green to show its support for Myotonic Dystrophy Awareness Day.

The University Arena and Pershore Abbey will be lit on September 15 to raise the profile of the rare, genetic, neuromuscular disease.

Cure DM UK Charity supports families affected by congenial myotonic dystrophy, the most severe form of the disease.

Co-founder, Emma-Jayne Ashely, chose September 15 to mark her son's birthday.

Dregan Turner, now 22, was diagnosed with the disease when he was 15 and has spent the last two weeks in hospital.

Ms Ashley said: “It is really heart-warming to see that so many landmarks across the country are joining with us to raise awareness of Myotonic Dystrophy.

“It gives hope to so many families, like mine, across the UK, and the world, who are affected.

“We are delighted that they are lighting up to show solidarity for the families which this devastating condition affects, in such a positive way.”

Cure DM volunteer, Tamsyn Tait, has a one-year-old daughter, Daisy, who also had the disease.

Ms Tait said: “When we found out, we were in shock.

“We were lucky that the paediatrician was able to identify it.

“Very few medical practitioners have heard of the disease, so seeing landmarks across the country light up green will help boost the diseases profile so more people in the future can receive their diagnosis and the care they need.”

Myotonic Dystrophy affects around one in every 2,100 people has no cure or verified treatment.

The charity is asking people to send in their photos of the lit-up landmarks to curedm@outlook.com and you could be in with a chance of winning a £50 Amazon voucher.
