WORK to build the city's third Lidl store will soon be taking an important step forward.
Contractors Benniman Construction are almost ready to begin building the supermarket's store structure after preparing the site.
The work will see a new Lidl supermarket built on part of the JVM Castings site off Droitwich Road.
Construction work is said to be proceeding well and is on schedule for the city's new Lidl open its doors to customers in summer 2022.
It will be the third Lidl supermarket for the city with two other stores in Newtown Road and Blackpole Road.
Benniman Construction has completed the first phase of the overall build to create a new car park for JVM Castings.
In turn, it opened up the former car park site to be prepared for the new Lidl.
They are also putting in the sustainable drainage system and ground works for that are now ongoing.
The 2,200 square metre supermarket will include a bakery and self-service checkouts.
A 110-space car park including six disabled bays and eight parent and child spaces would also be built.
Next, they will start building the Lidl store structure and store itself on the platform they are creating through the current ground works.
Paul Jagroop, director at Ashfield Land, said: “We’re making really good progress, are on programme and are looking forward to delivering the new Lidl store next summer.
"There’s a tremendous spirit of cooperation between us, JVM Castings, Lidl and our contractor Benniman Construction which is a local firm and knows the area really well. We’re pressing on positively and are full steam ahead.”
