VANDALS have scrawled racist graffiti on the side of a home in Warndon causing outrage and disgust.

The symbol for the National Front has been scrawled in black spray paint on the side of a home in Shap Drive.

Dog walker Sarah Murray was upset when she saw the letters NF, which stand for National Front, daubed on the side of the house.

Worcester City Council initially told Mrs Murray it would not remove it as it was on private property.

However, after being contacted by Worcester News the decision has been reversed.

A Worcester City Council spokesman said: “We have looked into this case again, and we deem this graffiti to be offensive.

"We are acting to remove it as soon as possible.”

The National Front is a far-right political party which was founded in 1967.

It reached the height of its notoriety in the mid-1970s when it was briefly the UK’s fourth-largest political party.

Though it is now on the political fringe it still has its supporters.

Mrs Murray said: “I grew up in Leicestershire at a time when graffiti like this was commonplace.

“I immediately reported it to the city council as it’s clearly visible to passers-by.

"I was surprised by the Council’s response that as the graffiti is on private property it’s not their responsibility to remove it.

"Warndon is a diverse part of the city and members of ethnic minorities, the LGBT community, and others will find graffiti of this nature both offensive and worrying.”

Mrs Murray, who also organises the litter picking group Warndon Wombles, has also contacted Liberal Democrat city councillor Karen Lawrance.

Cllr Lawrance said: “Far-right groups like the National Front seek to divide.

“Whether the graffiti is on public or private land it’s clearly visible to anyone passing by.

"Groups like the National Front have no place in our community and I will be urging the council to remove the graffiti as soon as possible.”
