LESSONS were learnt as the Hereford, Ludlow & North Shropshire College squad continued their EFL Alliance league campaign with a trip to Newport.

The task in hand was a tough one due to Newport having 52 players in their under-19 squads to choose from for their two teams in the EFL Alliance.

A lot of these players have been through their academy system and did not quite make the scholarship route or were let go beforehand and are looking for a different way into the professional game.

In contrast the Hereford Ludlow & North Shropshire College squad contains 16 players with no players having been in a professional clubs academy system

However, following an opening game defeat at Plymouth the Hereford-based side set up a new compact system and at half-time trailed only 2-1.

The goal from the Hereford students came courtesy of Hubert Dejnowiec.

For 15 minutes at start of second half a string of chances for the Hereford based side went begging as they probed for a way back into the tie.

The visitors' efforts were undone on the counter-attack and they were 3-1 down with 15mins to go. Pushing forward the Hereford side were again outdone and the final score was a disappointing 5-1.

The college team have drawn Championship side AFC Bournemouth away in the cup this week.
