Motorists are facing delays of over an hour on the M5 after a large lorry fire earlier this afternoon.

Traffic was originally fully halted northbound between J8 (M50) and J7 (Worcester (S) / Evesham) as crews worked to put out the fire.

Two of three lanes have since been reopened going past the scene, however, there are still tailbacks stretching as far as J9 (Tewkesbury).

National Highways for West Midlands tweeted: "Delays continue to increase approaching the scene of the vehicle fire #M5 northbound #J8 (#SouthWales #M50) to #J7 (#Worcester #A44).

"Delays are now 60 minutes above usual journey times with congestion back to J9 (#Tewkesbury)."

The latest update on the AA Traffic News website estimates that drivers are facing setbacks totalling 91 minutes.

Delays are said to be gradually easing, but it is not yet clear when the third lane of the M5 will be reopened.

Maintenance crews are in attendance at the scene.
