Councillors voted unanimously to block a “gross overdevelopment” at a residential property in Worcester.

Members of the committee described the plans for a ground and first floor wrap-around extension at a property in Georgina Avenue as a “monstrosity”.

Councillor Alan Amos said: “I have been on this planning committee for a long time and let me tell you, this is the first time I have heard of a wraparound.

“Wrap something around me and I’ll become even fatter, which is exactly what will happen to this property.

“I don’t see how anyone could be expected to pass this at all. It is an ugly monstrosity and a gross overdevelopment.”

Local opposition from nearby residents cited a number of concerns about the plans.

Complaints included the visual impact on the street, the disruption generated during building work and a loss of privacy to a neighbouring property.

They also felt the extension was an ‘overdevelopment’ of the site.

A report compiled by council officers before the meeting noted while the proposed extensions were ‘substantial’, they felt the plot was significant enough for it not to be deemed an overdevelopment, although they did admit the application was ‘balanced’.

However, Councillor Bill Amos emphatically disagreed, he said: “This isn’t an extension, it is a complete rebuild.

“If we allow this it would set a dangerous precedent for the area, it completely changes the character of the whole street.

“If this was applied to every house in the street it would become one of the most oppressive to live in Worcester.”

Councillor Jo Hodges said: “If you want a property of this size I don’t understand why you would go for an extension, why not just move to a house where the land could facilitate a house of this size.”

The meeting of the committee was held at the Guildhall on Thursday, November 25 at 1.30pm.
