DRIVERS have been dangerously drifting their cars around a city centre multi-storey car park.

The late night meet up at St Martin's Gate car park on City Walls Road was interrupted by police officers from OPU Worcestershire.

Three cars were caught by officers using the car park as a 'drift track' yesterday (Thursday) evening.

One of the cars had such a severely smashed windscreen that officers deemed it to dangerous to be safely driven because the driver could not see out of it clearly.

Officers prohibited the vehicle which means it is not allowed to be driven on roads until it is fixed.

Drifting involves the driver intentionally oversteering which leads to a loss of traction while maintaining control and driving the car around a corner.

An OPU Worcestershire officer shared a picture of the cracked windscreen and wrote: "This vehicle drew our attention by being one of 3 others who decided to use St Martin's Gate carpark as a drift track.

"The windscreen was so damaged that it posed a safety risk and affected drivers view.

"The vehicle was prohibited due to its condition."

A Worcester City Council spokesman said: “We will co-operate fully with the police over this matter.

"In order to reduce the potential for anti-social behaviour at St Martin’s Gate multi-storey car park we keep it closed from midnight to 7am each and every day.”

St Martin's Gate car park has been locked up at night since November 2009 after being plagued by boy racers, vandalism, drug-taking and anti-social behaviour.

The ground floor remained open at the time but the whole car park is now closed from midnight until the following morning.
