A MASSIVE vaccination drive in Worcester has been hailed as a great success by organisers.

Hundreds of residents braved the bitterly cold temperatures to receive Covid boosters at drop-in events on November 27.

These were held at the Warndon Hub and the St John's Medical Centre.

In a team effort between Worcester City Council, Worcester Community Trust, St John Ambulance, and Worcester City PCN, at least 650 jabs were given on Friday, 250+ in first two hours on Saturday and at St Johns later in the day.

David McDowell, patient quality manager for Worcester City PCN said: "It’s been fantastic to see the people of Worcester come out in force once again to get vaccinated against Covid-19 - protecting both themselves and our local NHS.

"With over 1,000 vaccines given so far (as of 11am Saturday morning) despite Storm Arwen’s best efforts, it shows there’s still a real appetite among patients to get this jab, and we’re grateful to everyone who’s come down so far.

"We’d like to say a special thanks to our staff, and the many volunteers who are giving up their time this weekend to make it happen including St John's Ambulance, Here2Help and the many NHS staff who are working seven day weeks to help us make this happen."

Big weekend is part of an effort to get as many people vaccinated ahead of the Christmas season, especially with the new Omicron variant having been detected in the UK already.

Christine Heywood, customer service and hub team manager at Worcester Community Trust, added: "This has been a brilliant opportunity to support our local community by opening our Hubs as pop-up vaccination centres like this over the last few months.

"This weekend’s event has also been a fabulous opportunity to highlight the White Ribbon campaign which launched on Thursday - with staff and volunteers wearing white ribbons, and the campaign on display in our Observation Area as part of these 16 days of action to end violence against women."
