AN organisation that celebrates the South Asian Community has been awarded £23,000 to fund two projects.

Worcester City Mela has received funding for an oral history project and an artwork.

The group received the funding from The National Lottery Arts Council funding of £15,000 and a further £8,000 from the city and county councils and Talk to Me Worcester was donated to fund the two events.

The word ‘Mela’ refers to a celebration or a series of festive events, which the organisation is aiming to make an annual occurrence.

The Mela Voices Project documents the contributions made by the South Asian community to the city, as well as documenting their journey to the city through pictures, memories, and shared stories.

Members of the South Asian community are encouraged to bring in old photos and memorabilia along to the event, where traditional food will be served, and family activities will be available.

The second project will see an art installation paying tribute to those that have lost their lives through covid through at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Peter Knott, area director, Arts Council England said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, we’re pleased to be supporting the Worcester Mela Partnership for these two projects celebrating the South Asian community in the city.

“It’s a great opportunity for Worcester residents to engage with a creative and educational project, as well as pay tribute to those who have helped support us all during what has been a very challenging time.”

Chairman of the Worcester Mela, councillor Jabba Riaz, said, “As chair and founder of The Worcester Mela, we would like to thank the city and all of our volunteers and who have made this vision a reality.

“The Art Installation will symbolize hope and transition from a period of darkness into one of light, commemorating those who have lost their lives and honour the key NHS workers and staff.

“We hope that this is the catalyst of a series of events and festivals that will culminate in the Worcester Mela Becoming a regular fixture in the city’s events calendar.”

The Mela Voices project will be held on Saturday, December 11 at Unity House on Stanley Road.
