The local RSPCA Christmas Fayre is at risk following the death of a cold and underweight cat found in a garage.

Peter the cat was rescued by the RSPCA Worcester and Mid-Worcestershire on Thursday but unfortunately passed away just a day later.

Despite being fully grown Peter weighed the same as a 10-week-old kitten.

A statement from the RSPCA read: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to tell you all that despite our best efforts and that of our vets, poor little Peter didn't make it.

“We know that we can't save them all and sadly in animal rescue, there will always be heartbreaking cases like this but it doesn't stop it from hurting all the same.

“We can only gain comfort in knowing that Peter is now out of his pain and suffering and that, in the last couple of days of his life, he was loved and cared for and treated with kindness and dignity.

“Sleep well, little man.”

Peter was found in a garage in the Pirton area and was described as “very emaciated and unwell”.

Following Storm Arwen the local RSPCA branch made the decision to cancel the Chrismas Fayre that was scheduled to take place tomorrow, Sunday December 5.

However, since this decision was made Peter, along with two other cats, arrived at the centre.

As such it has been decided that a “scaled down version” of the fayre will take place to help raise the funds needed to pay the veterinary bills of the animals.

A spokesman said: “In light of our desperate need for funding to cover veterinary costs, we have taken the decision to hold a scaled down version of our Christmas Fayre this Sunday 5th December from 12-2pm at The Holdings.

“Sadly we won't be offering food nor running our tombola but we will be selling lots of Christmas themed goodies, decorations and gifts.

“The forecast so far is for it to be dry and bright, we have our marquee in place so all we need now is you lovely lot!

“We sincerely hope that you might be able to pop along to join us and hopefully bag a bargain or two.

“As always, we truly couldn't do what we do without your support!”
